Let’s Meet Zohran Mamdani

Hello everybody!  Are you as excited for Halloween as I am?  I love this time of year so much!  I just bought a real pumpkin and will make a jack-o-lantern for my son.  What do you like to do for Halloween?

Also, in America, the election season is quickly approaching.  At the beginning of November, there are usually many elections all over the United States.  This year, the most famous race is in NYC.  People will vote for the new mayor of NYC on November 4th, and there is a very popular candidate right now who is expected to win the election easily.  His name is Zohran Mamdani.  Why don’t we take a few minutes to learn about this unique person who is soon to be the mayor of the most famous city in the world!

Zohran Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, to Indian parents — his father a Muslim and his mother a Hindu. When he was young, his family moved to South Africa and later to New York City, where he grew up in Manhattan. He went to the Bronx High School of Science and started the school’s first cricket team. After high school, he attended Bowdoin College in Maine and graduated in 2014.

Before becoming a politician, Mamdani worked as a housing counselor, helping people in Queens who were at risk of losing their homes. He is also a rapper who performs under the name Young Cardamom and once made a song in honor of his grandmother. His interest in helping others led him to join the Democratic Socialists of America and eventually run for office. In 2020, he was elected to the New York State Assembly, where he helped make some city bus routes free and supported taxi drivers struggling with debt.

In 2024, Mamdani announced that he was running for mayor of New York City. His ideas include making all buses free, raising the minimum wage, building affordable housing, and providing universal child care. He also wants to fight climate change and make the city fairer for everyone. Even though he has faced unfair criticism because of his background, many people support him for his focus on equality, justice, and helping working families.

Again, he is only 33 years old, but he is intelligent and passionate.   Hopefully, he can make NYC a better place for everyone.  Do you have any opinions about politics these days?  If so, please share them with your teachers at BRIDGE!  Thanks for reading and have a great weekend.
