A Graduation Surprise

Hello all you English learners!  Nagoya is starting to get hot, so please prepare for the heat to come.  Make sure to drink plenty of water and avoid direct sunlight if you can.

Today, we’d like to discuss traditions at the end of the school year, and in American right now, it is graduation time for students in high school and unviersity.  At most big universities, a famous or important person usually speaks to students and encourages them to succeed in their future careers.  Next week, there will be a very special guest at one university!

Kermit the Frog is going to give a speech at the University of Maryland graduation. He will talk to the students who are finishing college and starting their adult lives. Kermit is a famous Muppet who was created by Jim Henson, who also went to the University of Maryland many years ago. There’s even a statue of Jim Henson and Kermit on the college campus.

The university chose Kermit because he is known for being kind, creative, and hopeful. He has been in movies, TV shows, and even written books. Kermit said he’s happy to speak at the graduation and believes the students will go out and make the world a better place. His message is all about dreaming big and not giving up — even when things are hard.

Do you think Kermit is a good choice to motivate students?  What kind of fun traditions do students have in Japan?  Please tell your teachers the next time you come to BRIDGE!
